Everything old is new again! In more ways than one!
I’m pleased to share with you this article from the Summer 2014 issue of Craft Industry Today – The Craft & Hobby Association Magazine featuring a project that I designed in the Trend Report – Relic Boxes Decorative Time Capsules. I was rather shocked to discover this project in the magazine because it’s a project that I created over 9 years ago when I was a new mother and budding entrepreneur! After all these years now it’s “officially” become a craft trend!
Before I began working with manufacturers in the CHA, I used to run a business making these Decorative Time Capsules (as well as funky charm jewelry and embellished tank tops) and sold them to several very high end boutiques in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. They were featured in trendy Harajuku shops and even the Tokyo Ritz Carlton. It was quite the home enterprise and with a small team of me and a few friends we produced hundreds of these for all sorts of occasions and themes including: baby, wedding, travel, graduation, girlfriends, kids, spiritual, sports, pets and even ones that were highly unique and personalized for custom orders. They were all one of a kind and handmade with love! You can see many of them HERE.
I was proud to learn that my original upcycled craft technique (one of the earliest examples of decoden that I’ve seen) has become a trend in the craft and hobby world. It got me wondering if my handmade products may have contributed to the birth of the decoden crafting craze that’s come out of Japan?
Here’s one of my early videos, a feature on Creative Living on PBS from 2009 where I teach host Sheryl Borden how to create Relic Boxes Decorative Time Capsules out of upcycled baby food jars. To see more of my craft demonstrations on PBS click HERE.

I love that Audrey took these dies and created this awesome project in her own very elegant and individualized crafting style! I really like how this designer took those same shapes and incorporated them into a project which reflects her own unique signature style! Here you can see how Audrey cleverly used the mini envelope as an interactive design accent on the front of a handmade greeting card!
