Easy Patchwork Sneakers with the Brother PE540D Personal Embroidery System

Hello friends! I’m excited to share this fun project with you which I created all on the Brother PE540D Personal Embroidery System!

The PE540D is the perfect entry level embroidery machine that comes pre-loaded with 105 built-in embroidery designs, including 35 designs featuring Disney characters, plus 5 embroidery lettering styles!

PE540D In Studio

For this project I embroidered some cute sewing theme designs onto some heavyweight cotton to begin making my own little custom patches. This machine features computer connectivity, so I simply loaded my design from my computer onto the machine with the included USB cord. You could also do this project with any of the built-in designs that come pre-loaded on the machine, or you could purchase the design of your choice from ibroidery.com. They happen to be having an awesome 20% OFF SALE right now up until February 28th! And be sure to sign up HERE to receive FREE embroidery designs and special offers! I went with a monochromatic embroidery design and chose some pretty purple embroidery thread from my stash!

And speaking of stash, check out my fabulous new Super Satchel Thread Box from ArtBin! It’s perfect for keeping all of my various embroidery threads organized! I absolutely love it!

I embroidered the designs and then made my own adhesive patches by backing the designs with Aleene’s Fabric Fusion Sheets. They are perfect for making your own peel and stick patches and the adhesive is super strong! I then cut the patches with some Westcott Brand NonStick Scissors.

Next I embellished the patches using some bright neon Crafty Chica Juicy Fabric Inks.

Here’s a close up of one of my cute sneaker patches with a funky little sewing machine!

I made a whole bunch of these and decorated my sneakers with them. I think the frayed edges really add to the handmade look!

This is a great way to jazz up a plain pair of sneakers and customize them to suit your own particular sense of style, interests or hobbies!

I love how the Brother PE540D easily empowers me to create my own custom clothing and accessories! It’s just so fun and inspiring! I am working on a video tutorial for this project and am excited to share it with you once posted! Thanks so much for tuning into my adventure into the world of sewing and machine embroidery with Brother!

Disney Remix Shirt Dress with the Brother Innov-Is 990D

Happy Friday Friends and Fellow Sewing Enthusiasts! Today I’m super excited to share my latest project from my exploration into the world of home sewing and machine embroidery with the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! Check out this fabulous upcycled Disney frock!

I created a fun shirt dress by cutting off the bottom part of a men’s dress shirt and combining it with a sewn and gathered blue polka dot bubble skirt! This project was super easy to do, and I added some fun custom touches to give it a super cute look! For one, I swapped out the original buttons for blue heart shaped buttons. This was my first time using the button sewing feature on the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! At first I avoided this feature because I was afraid that I would do it wrong and break the needle by sewing into the button but much to my delight the process was actually totally fun and easy! I vow that from this day forward I will never hand sew a button on again! Unless of course I find myself in an emergency wardrobe malfunction with out my trusty 990D!

I added a Minnie Mouse “Pocket Pal” detail using one of the built-in embroidery designs that come pre-loaded on the machine. However, instead of following the included color guide with the usual pink or red, I switched up the colors and gave Minnie matching a blue dress and hair bow! I love how this machine comes with built-in Disney designs and allows me to mix it up and create my own different colored versions of these fun classic characters!

To add an element of surprise, I incorporated another one of the built-in designs onto the back of the shirt. For this I embroidered the built-in Minnie Mouse signature design in the large size. I think this detail added a really upscale touch to my beautiful upcycled dress!

The dress I designed also includes a satin ribbon sash that runs through two belt loops on the sides, giving this cute look a really tailored effect. This dress was super easy to create and could be easily customized by changing the color or style of the shirt, the fabric for the skirt, the buttons or by choosing different embroidery designs, either from the built in designs that come pre-loaded on the machine or from any of the many awesome designs available to purchase and download from ibroidery.com! You could also alter the length of the skirt, or even edit the sleeves! There’s so much you can do with this fun dress shirt remix idea, the possibilities for creative fashion are endless! I’m working on a video tutorial to show you how to create this fun project at home, so stay tuned friends!

CHA 2015 Mega Show Total ReCap

Today.2Greetings Dear Friends! I made it back from the Craft & Hobby Association 2015 Mega Show and am excited to report that yet again, the annual trade show was a smashing success for Modern Surrealist and all of our partner companies! There was so much exciting stuff going on at the show that I barely know where to begin!

Step into my office… er Sizzix display!

I spent my mornings in the Sizzix booth, demonstrating several of the shape cutting tools from my new line. The steel rule dies (shape cutting tools) at the focus of the make n’ take were the Chandelier and Hoop Earrings. Some folks even opted to get super creative and combine them with the Lips, Zodiac and Peace Signs! Click HERE to view the full photo album from my appearance in the Sizzix booth and to see many of the awesome earrings created by the attendees.

Elmer, buyer from Boy Scouts of America joined in the earring making fun! He’s such a great sport!

The basic materials provided for the earrings project were vibrant Rowlux Illusion Film (which also made a big splash at the Designer Sneak Peek event) and my new licensed line of Dazzling Diamond Sticker Sheets for The Buckle Boutique! If you’re not familiar with these sheets, they are adhesive back sheets of soft acrylic rhinestones that can easily be cut with scissors, trimmers, steel rule dies and even electronic cutters! They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns and at the show we introduced our new Quad Sheets which are the first ever adhesive rhinestone sheets to feature licensed surface designs AND multiple designs on one sheet!

Make n’ Takes at The Buckle Boutique booth

Here’s a video from The Buckle Boutique booth where I show the fun make n’ take we did with the NEW Wide Cuff die (shipping to stores this May along with all the rest of my new dies that debuted at the show) from my new collection with Sizzix. Click HERE to view all of my Sizzix dies that are currently available at retail.

Shawn Mosch who heads up marketing for The Buckle Boutique did this lovely blog post which details the SKUs of our debut collaborative collection of licensed bling and illustrates the utterly massive amount of crafty fun that was had in our booth!

Even the guys got into the bling!

At the Designer Sneak Peek event, I presented the Modern Surrealist licensed bling sheets as well as the newest version of Rowlux Illusion Film which was featured on the Charity Wings LIVE from CHA Webcast. Click HERE to see the demo video of our NEW OPAQUE Rowlux Illusion Film Sheets! Charity Wings also stopped by the Sizzix booth to give viewers a sneak peek at the NEW shape Sizzix cutting tools from Modern Surrealist and Eileen Hull. Click HERE to watch the video from that LIVE webcast (my segment starts at 00:10:00)!

Unlocking the Magic with Brother and Disney! And check out the fabulous apron I made with the Innov-Is 990D Combination Sewing & Embroidery Machine!

At the show, I had the wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the brand new Project Runway Limited Edition Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine and the SC9500 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine. I had a such fun time working with my new Brother family! The booth display featured many of the projects I’ve designed as the new brand ambassador for Brother Home Sewing & Embroidery! Good times in the Westcott Brand booth with Joanne Fink, author of the Zenspirations book series

And of course it would not be a CHA Show without making a appearance in the Westcott Brand booth! I had an absolute blast reconnecting with Joanne Fink to cross promote her Zenspirations book collection with the award winning Axis iPoint Evolution pencil sharpener! We also did a really cute quilting make n’ take to show off Westcott’s new Pinking Shears! To view the full photo album from our appearance in the Westcott booth, click HERE. I had a fabulous time coordinating the Party Time with Westcott Brand Workshop with friends Wendy Russell and Jennifer Priest, where attendees learned 5 new coordinating party decor projects. And speaking of fun times with friends, check out this fun album highlighting several shots with my fabulous friends in the crafting industry!

BFF Elena from Charity Wings Art Center and Official Emcee of LIVE from CHA

Another one of the highlights was filming an interview for the MSNBC show Your Business, which gave me the opportunity to share my entrepreneurial tips and tricks with viewers! Stay tuned for the segment to air sometime in the next few weeks!
