Upcycled Tie Dye Dress with Coordinating Floral Crystal Embellished Brooch

I’ve had this white lace dress a while and it developed some permanent yellow stains over time, so I decided to give it a new life by transforming it with one step tie-dye and by also making a coordinating floral brooch!

This is what the dress looked like before. It was old, stained and slightly ratty, but it still had good “bones”. That’s where the handy one step tie-dye job came in! Upcycling to the rescue!

I made the brooch my embellishing an old large promotional button I received at an event and covering it with beautiful accents! I love the feminine style and am excited to have saved my favorite dress and given it a whole new fresh look for spring!

Here’s how you can recreate this project at home:

Materials:

  • Dress
  • Old large “freebie” button
  • Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit
  • Little B Pull Flowers
  • Prima Bead Swarovski Crystals
  • iLoveToCreate Liquid Fusion Clear Urethane Adhesive
  • Buttons
  • Large Faux Pearl
  • Mod Podge Mod Melter
  • Hand Sewing Needle
  • Coats Dual Duty XP Thread

 Instructions:

Tie dye the garment as per the kits instructions. To create the brooch, scrunch up Little B Pull Flowers and glue them to the “freebie” button with the Mod Melter hot glue applicator. Use the same technique to adhere the buttons and large faux pearl. Accent the piece by applying crystals using the clear urethane adhesive. Use a needle and thread to attach the crystal beads. Pin the brooch to your garment and get ready to rock this frock all throughout the spring and summer seasons! You can also use the brooch to dress up jeans and an ordinary  t-shirt!

Disney Remix Shirt Dress with the Brother Innov-Is 990D

Happy Friday Friends and Fellow Sewing Enthusiasts! Today I’m super excited to share my latest project from my exploration into the world of home sewing and machine embroidery with the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! Check out this fabulous upcycled Disney frock!

I created a fun shirt dress by cutting off the bottom part of a men’s dress shirt and combining it with a sewn and gathered blue polka dot bubble skirt! This project was super easy to do, and I added some fun custom touches to give it a super cute look! For one, I swapped out the original buttons for blue heart shaped buttons. This was my first time using the button sewing feature on the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! At first I avoided this feature because I was afraid that I would do it wrong and break the needle by sewing into the button but much to my delight the process was actually totally fun and easy! I vow that from this day forward I will never hand sew a button on again! Unless of course I find myself in an emergency wardrobe malfunction with out my trusty 990D!

I added a Minnie Mouse “Pocket Pal” detail using one of the built-in embroidery designs that come pre-loaded on the machine. However, instead of following the included color guide with the usual pink or red, I switched up the colors and gave Minnie matching a blue dress and hair bow! I love how this machine comes with built-in Disney designs and allows me to mix it up and create my own different colored versions of these fun classic characters!

To add an element of surprise, I incorporated another one of the built-in designs onto the back of the shirt. For this I embroidered the built-in Minnie Mouse signature design in the large size. I think this detail added a really upscale touch to my beautiful upcycled dress!

The dress I designed also includes a satin ribbon sash that runs through two belt loops on the sides, giving this cute look a really tailored effect. This dress was super easy to create and could be easily customized by changing the color or style of the shirt, the fabric for the skirt, the buttons or by choosing different embroidery designs, either from the built in designs that come pre-loaded on the machine or from any of the many awesome designs available to purchase and download from ibroidery.com! You could also alter the length of the skirt, or even edit the sleeves! There’s so much you can do with this fun dress shirt remix idea, the possibilities for creative fashion are endless! I’m working on a video tutorial to show you how to create this fun project at home, so stay tuned friends!

Easy Summer Dress Remix with Brother Home Sewing & Embroidery

Happy Sunday Friends! Looking for the perfect outfit for a Sunday brunch? Sad that summers ending and wish you could keep wearing those fun summer dresses into fall? Well here’s a fun project for you that I created using the Brother Innov-is 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine with built in Disney Designs!

I had been meaning to wear this printed maxi dress all summer, but it for some reason was designed to fit supermodels or people who like to wear really high heels – not me. So all summer it sat in my closet! The other day I realized that it’ s time to accept that summer has ended. Instead of relegating it to another 9 months in my closet, I decided to take swift action and shorten the dress. In the process I was left with a long strip of coordinating fabric that I turned into a scarf! So now I can wear my dress with a matching scarf to keep warm during the transition to fall! I think it came out really cute!

Slide1I must admit that the reason I’d put off altering this dress was my fear of sewing stretchy fabrics! I had always assumed it was difficult and unwieldy to work with stretchy fabrics. That was until I began sewing with the Brother Innov-is 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine with built in Disney Designs! Brother Sewing Machines are so user friendly! I learned quickly how to select the proper stitch pattern for stretch fabrics, which needle to use and I was on my way to creating this updated dress remix with matching scarf!

L1090009 L1090010 L1090011This project was insanely easy and gave my summer dress a whole new lease on life! Thanks for tuning in to my adventures in home sewing and machine embroidery with Brother! Please be sure to stop by next week for another quick and easy project idea!
