Disney Remix Shirt Dress with the Brother Innov-Is 990D

I created a fun shirt dress by cutting off the bottom part of a men’s dress shirt and combining it with a sewn and gathered blue polka dot bubble skirt! This project was super easy to do, and I added some fun custom touches to give it a super cute look! For one, I swapped out the original buttons for blue heart shaped buttons. This was my first time using the button sewing feature on the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! At first I avoided this feature because I was afraid that I would do it wrong and break the needle by sewing into the button but much to my delight the process was actually totally fun and easy! I vow that from this day forward I will never hand sew a button on again! Unless of course I find myself in an emergency wardrobe malfunction with out my trusty 990D!

I added a Minnie Mouse “Pocket Pal” detail using one of the built-in embroidery designs that come pre-loaded on the machine. However, instead of following the included color guide with the usual pink or red, I switched up the colors and gave Minnie matching a blue dress and hair bow! I love how this machine comes with built-in Disney designs and allows me to mix it up and create my own different colored versions of these fun classic characters!

To add an element of surprise, I incorporated another one of the built-in designs onto the back of the shirt. For this I embroidered the built-in Minnie Mouse signature design in the large size. I think this detail added a really upscale touch to my beautiful upcycled dress!

The dress I designed also includes a satin ribbon sash that runs through two belt loops on the sides, giving this cute look a really tailored effect. This dress was super easy to create and could be easily customized by changing the color or style of the shirt, the fabric for the skirt, the buttons or by choosing different embroidery designs, either from the built in designs that come pre-loaded on the machine or from any of the many awesome designs available to purchase and download from ibroidery.com! You could also alter the length of the skirt, or even edit the sleeves! There’s so much you can do with this fun dress shirt remix idea, the possibilities for creative fashion are endless! I’m working on a video tutorial to show you how to create this fun project at home, so stay tuned friends!

Something Blue for Saying I Do!

Happy Friday Friends! Today I am pleased to share a project with you that I created for a very special family member/friend’s wedding! This project makes a perfect gift for the bride to be and the embroidery design could be easily adapted to any Valentines Day project whether or not you’re you plan on getting hitched!

So first a little backstory…

My dear friend Estelle was set to wed her longtime beau Nick in a beautiful ceremony in northern California. These two make the perfect couple might I add! Estelle’s mother was kind enough to invite me to participate in the tradition of giving the bride something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue! Keep in mind that Estelle is a woman of great style and her art deco style wedding ensemble featured one of the most stunning garments I have ever seen in my life! I mean just check out the bejeweled back of her amazing dress right there!

Her very thoughtful mother asked me to join in the tradition by contributing something blue! Naturally at first I was at a total loss for ideas, since there was no way I would ever want to ruin the fabulous look she already had going on! I wanted to create a blue accessory that would be meaningful, but not interfere with her already perfect wedding attire.

Then eureka! I thought to create her a customized hankie that not only commemorates their love, but also happens to be quite practical too – for absorbing all those inevitable tears of joy! FYI – I have a tendency to cry at every wedding, or actually, make that a  guarantee! Here is a recreation of the hankie that I made for the bride for her special day.

I created this special project on the Innov-Is 990D Combination Sewing & Embroidery Machine! The design is made completely with the built-in design elements that come pre-loaded onto this fabulous machine!

I began by embroidering a heart frame with a beautiful scalloped  border, and then customized it by adding the names of the bride and groom. Then I trimmed the hankie and hemmed the edges with one of the 168 built in stitches that also come pre-loaded on the Brother Innovis-990D! And to finish this piece off, I chose to accent the border with a beautiful floral decorative stitch in the coordinating cornflower blue thread color.

What I absolutely LOVE about my journey into the world of home sewing and machine embroidery with Brother is that it has enabled me to easily create priceless keepsakes that commemorate once in a lifetime events such as this!

New Crafty Chica Projects with Brother Home Sewing

Happy Friday Crafty Chicas (and chicos)! Today I am excited to share with you some fun new sewing projects that I created with the Brother Innov-is 990D featuring embellishments from the brand new line of Crafty Chica products! My dear friend Kathy Cano-Murillo, founder of the wildly popular Crafty Chica brand sent me an assortment of her wonderful new products from iLoveToCreate! These products are all so fun! The inspiration was flowing as I created a new custom lunch bag, tank top and tote bag just in time for Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead! Here are all of the great items I received!

L1090024

The item that first caught my attention was the Iron On & Embellish Flocked Transfers. I began by ironing one on to a hot pink tank top. The crafty Chica Tip on the back of the pack was to think outside the t-shirt, but since Day of The Dead is fast approaching and I need something to wear, I went ahead and applied the flocked transfer to the top. Beacuse of the look of the transfer, at first I thought the design would have much wider lines, however I realized that the lines actually end up nice and thin with great detail.

L1090017And afterwards I was left with this nice remnant which I will definitely be saving for another project, perhaps a card or home decor item.

L1090023Once I finished transferring the design onto my top, I decided to add some additional bling! I sewed a satin bow which I stitched directly onto the top with the Brother Innov-is 990D. This way the dimensional embellishment  would stand the test of time and keep it’s shape.

IMG_0110IMG_0111Then I added a studded grill to the teeth, just to give it an added touch of bling!

L1090018I think it came out really cute and am excited to wear it out!

L1090016After I finished the tank top, I decides to bling out a basic lunch bag with some of the iron on appliques. I actually used fabric glue to adhere them since ironing a synthetic lunch bag would not be a good idea. L1090014After I adhered the cute skulls, I decided to really get my inner Crafty Chica on and go to town with the theme by adding some decorative stitching to the lunch bag strap.

L1090013The Brother Innov-is 990D has a variety of built in  decorative stitch patterns including several fonts. With red thread I spelled out the words Crafty Chica and with purple thread I stitched a row of winding flowers!

L1090012After I completed the lunch bag I decided to try out one of the Personalized Mini Tote Kits. I sat through watching a Chronicles of Narnia movie with my son while entertaining myself coloring in the cute skull and hearts. The kit came with 3 Crafty Chica fabric markers and I experimented with some color blending. It was so fun and relaxing! Kind of like doing a low stress activity like a puzzle or coloring book!L1090020

On the back of the package there was another Crafty Chica Tip that I decided to try out, “Line the inside with your own colorful fabric!” So I went ahead and did just that using my amazing Brother Innov-is 990D. But don’t be fooled! This is no ordinary bag liner! I created a special liner that when lifted up has a drawstring, so that if I over stuff the bag, or just want some added security, I can tie the little drawstring at the top!

L1090021I sewed a button hole to run the drawstring through and also embellished the drawstring using one of the built in decorative leaf stitch patterns on the Brother Innov-is 990D, just to add another special custom touch to this very festive mini tote bag!

L1090022I highly recommend the Brother Innov-is 990D for use with the new Crafty Chica product line! They make a great pairing!

L1090025With Day of the Dead just around the corner, I am also really looking forward to trying out the face paint too!

A great big thanks to Crafty Chica for sending me these fun samples to play around and experiment with!

Easy Summer Dress Remix with Brother Home Sewing & Embroidery

Happy Sunday Friends! Looking for the perfect outfit for a Sunday brunch? Sad that summers ending and wish you could keep wearing those fun summer dresses into fall? Well here’s a fun project for you that I created using the Brother Innov-is 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine with built in Disney Designs!

NV990D_1_L

I had been meaning to wear this printed maxi dress all summer, but it for some reason was designed to fit supermodels or people who like to wear really high heels – not me. So all summer it sat in my closet! The other day I realized that it’ s time to accept that summer has ended. Instead of relegating it to another 9 months in my closet, I decided to take swift action and shorten the dress. In the process I was left with a long strip of coordinating fabric that I turned into a scarf! So now I can wear my dress with a matching scarf to keep warm during the transition to fall! I think it came out really cute!

Slide1I must admit that the reason I’d put off altering this dress was my fear of sewing stretchy fabrics! I had always assumed it was difficult and unwieldy to work with stretchy fabrics. That was until I began sewing with the Brother Innov-is 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine with built in Disney Designs! Brother Sewing Machines are so user friendly! I learned quickly how to select the proper stitch pattern for stretch fabrics, which needle to use and I was on my way to creating this updated dress remix with matching scarf!

L1090009 L1090010 L1090011This project was insanely easy and gave my summer dress a whole new lease on life! Thanks for tuning in to my adventures in home sewing and machine embroidery with Brother! Please be sure to stop by next week for another quick and easy project idea!
