Zipper Tunic Top with the Brother Innov-is 990D

Hello friends and fellow sewing enthusiasts! This week I am excited to share with you one of the most droolworthy fashion projects I think I’ve ever done! I have gotten so many compliments the two times I’ve worn this top since creating it a few days ago!

Check it out!

I created this project all on the Brother Innov-Is 990D Combination Sewing & Embroidery machine!

Although I left this version simple with the black fabric, you could also go to town embroidering the panels with all kinds of cool details!

The focal point of the awesome garment that I’ve designed here is the fabulous deluxe gold zipper! This was the first time that I attempted to sew a zipper on this machine, and as has been the experience with each time I’ve tried something new on the Innov-Is 990D, it worked like a charm on the very first try!

This was actually quite an easy design to create and I love how the zipper wraps around the neck to create a really elegant detail on the back. The draping is so flattering on any body type and it shows off the shoulders really nicely! And another really cool thing you can do is wear it over a shirt like a vest!

I’m working on a video tutorial of this project for Brother’s YouTube channel, so please stay tuned for that so you can learn how to easily recreate this awesome top for yourself!

Disney Remix Shirt Dress with the Brother Innov-Is 990D

Happy Friday Friends and Fellow Sewing Enthusiasts! Today I’m super excited to share my latest project from my exploration into the world of home sewing and machine embroidery with the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! Check out this fabulous upcycled Disney frock!

L1110573

I created a fun shirt dress by cutting off the bottom part of a men’s dress shirt and combining it with a sewn and gathered blue polka dot bubble skirt! This project was super easy to do, and I added some fun custom touches to give it a super cute look! For one, I swapped out the original buttons for blue heart shaped buttons. This was my first time using the button sewing feature on the Brother Innov-IS 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery Machine! At first I avoided this feature because I was afraid that I would do it wrong and break the needle by sewing into the button but much to my delight the process was actually totally fun and easy! I vow that from this day forward I will never hand sew a button on again! Unless of course I find myself in an emergency wardrobe malfunction with out my trusty 990D!

I added a Minnie Mouse “Pocket Pal” detail using one of the built-in embroidery designs that come pre-loaded on the machine. However, instead of following the included color guide with the usual pink or red, I switched up the colors and gave Minnie matching a blue dress and hair bow! I love how this machine comes with built-in Disney designs and allows me to mix it up and create my own different colored versions of these fun classic characters!

L1110517

To add an element of surprise, I incorporated another one of the built-in designs onto the back of the shirt. For this I embroidered the built-in Minnie Mouse signature design in the large size. I think this detail added a really upscale touch to my beautiful upcycled dress!

L1110546

The dress I designed also includes a satin ribbon sash that runs through two belt loops on the sides, giving this cute look a really tailored effect. This dress was super easy to create and could be easily customized by changing the color or style of the shirt, the fabric for the skirt, the buttons or by choosing different embroidery designs, either from the built in designs that come pre-loaded on the machine or from any of the many awesome designs available to purchase and download from ibroidery.com! You could also alter the length of the skirt, or even edit the sleeves! There’s so much you can do with this fun dress shirt remix idea, the possibilities for creative fashion are endless! I’m working on a video tutorial to show you how to create this fun project at home, so stay tuned friends!

Customized 95th Birthday Embroidered Shirt with the Brother Innov-is 990D

95th bday shirt
Robin and his Special 95th Birthday Shirt

What do you give someone for their 95th birthday? It’s a tough question to answer. I recently found myself about to go to a relative’s 95th birthday party and thought what would he enjoy receiving on this special day? Robin has always been a joker and he spends much time leisurely lounging, so I thought why not create him a comfortable customized funny shirt to celebrate this momentous occasion?

Close Up of the Embroidered Sentiment Applique

To create this project, I began with a basic sweatshirt and used my Brother Innov-is 990D Combination Sewing & Embroidery Machine to take it from ordinary to extraordinary! The machine comes with a large 4″ x 4″ embroidery area. To fit the entire joke onto the denim applique, I used a handy hooping and re-hooping technique which I show you how to do in this video. With this technique, you can easily cover large areas with embroidered designs, by moving your hoop around. I embroidered the sentiment onto a piece of denim using one of the 5 built-in font styles that are built in to the machine. I chose a font style with a collegiate feel and easily embroidered the humorous applique. Used the same font in small, medium and large to create a clear graphic message.

Machine Embroidery in progress

After I’d embroidered the denim, I removed the embroidery unit from my machine, which automatically makes the machine go into sewing mode. After folding in and ironing the denim fabric edges, I selected a straight stitch and sewed all the way around the perimeter of the applique, about 1/8″ from the edge. Then I used some Stick Fusible Web from Fairfield World to iron the applique into place. I could have stopped there, but to make this shirt really polished and wearable for many years to come, I went ahead and top stitched all the way around the applique with the same straight stitch. I had so much fun making this shirt, that I decided to create a matching pair of sweat pants personalized with his name!

So by the time I was done, the joke didn’t really make sense, since I ended up giving him the “dumb shirt” and some matching pants, but he didn’t seem to mind!

A 95 Year Old’s Birthday Suit!

This project beautifully illustrates why I have become so enamored with machine embroidery! It’s the perfect way to commemorate special events with customized gifts, and show your loved ones how much you care!

Pajama Pants and School Uniforms with Brother Home Sewing

L1090269  This week I put my Brother Innov-is 990D Combination Sewing and Embroidery machine to really great use! My son Joey is a wonderful kid, but like all kids, he can be forgetful at times.

L1090267I live in fear of him losing his school sweater and jacket as they are expensive and hard to replace. And they can get switched around at school even if you write the kids’ names on the inner label! So I went ahead and embroidered his name on the front of both the jacket and cardigan and I think they came out really great! Look how happy he looks with his own customized uniform!

L1090273Another really fun thing I created this week with my awesome Innov-is 990D machine are two really cool pairs of custom pajama pants! I have been working on a video tutorial to show you how to easily create these for yourself.  I’m so excited for these new creations that wanted to give you guys a little sneak peek at them now! Check out these pants!

L1090255The first pair I created was basically a practice pair that I made to test the pattern. I made them out of some seasonal Day of the Dead stretchy polyester fabric from my local Parisina fabric store. They always have such unique and colorful fabric options!

L1090261I picked up this great print featuring a potpourri of Mexican sugar skulls, papel picado, marigold flowers and yummy pastries and created some seriously funky pajama pants. I love them so much I’ve actually been wearing them out with a tank top and jean jacket. They are super comfortable! The second pair I made out of an extremely comfortable fabric that Joey chose – super soft baby blue fleece – and I am wearing them as we speak! Haven’t worn them out yet but I am tempted to!

L1090274 I used the Innov-is 990D combination sewing and embroidery machine to sew and applique the pants with a cute Tinkerbell design that I downloaded from iBroidery.com and loaded onto my machine easily with a USB stick!L1090251 - Version 2There are so many wonderful designs to choose from! Brother is Official Licensee of Disney Embroidery Designs and the only manufacturer to offer embroidery machines with built-in Disney designs as well as downloadable Disney designs on their exclusive embroidery download site, iBroidery.com. There are so many awesome designs to choose from! You gotta check it out!
