Armed with a formal education in furniture design, Marisa used her talents to design products for the gift, toy, fashion and accessories markets before turning her focus to the craft industry. In 2005, sparked with an idea to create a recycled baby memento-keeper out of one of her son’s baby food jars, she founded Modern Surrealist LLC, which quickly developed an international following. Marisa enjoys inspiring crafters on her blog with thrifty project ideas for “upcycling” ordinary objects, into extraordinary custom creations! Her work has been featured by PBS, HGTV, Illinois State Museum and in countless exhibitions and high end boutiques around the world. Modern Surrealist has been providing customers around the globe with individualized and fantastical gifts, crafts and accessories since 2005. I am pleased to announce my recent win of the Plaid New Horizons Award! Plaid generously gives out two New Horizons Awards to CHA designers each year. This year I received the award from Plaid in the CHA craft design business of 6+ years category! Fellow CHA designer Jen Cushman received the award for the craft design business of 1-5 years! I am so very appreciative to be honored for all the hard work I have dedicated towards building a successful craft design business! Even more than the generous financial award, I am energized to be recognized for all the effort I have put forth over the years, as so well stated in the hand written card below from Plaid's President Mike McCooey! A heartfelt thanks to Plaid for inspiring and encouraging CHA designer entrepreneurs such as myself!
