Free Green Night Out
Tonight I had a lovely “Free Green Night Out” at the
where I attended a screening of the movie:
Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home, by Take Action Films.

The event was presented by the Batavia Environmental Commission, and hosted by commissioner Dianne Peterson.

In addition to the free popcorn and movie, there were also artistic inspirations of recycling such as Francis Joseph Gagnepains robot costume. We were also fortunate to enjoy a thorough description (with Q & A) of what happens to our garbage after it leaves the curb by recycling expert Gary Mielke. And did I mention the great prizes?!!!
This really was a fun and informative evening! Thank you all!

Very global! Very unselfish, Totally valuable initiative. I recycle everything too, and actually get some cool art from the process of saving the planet. More should follow the example you're setting. Thank you Marissa for the reference.

I learned a lot at the Free Green Night Out about recycling....
After thinking about it all weekend, here's what I have realized: Recycling is helpful, but it is not the cure all. Unfortunately, there are still many types of packaging being used that are not recyclable. Even if something can be recycled, it is impossible to keep recycling it over and over again, into the same product. For instance, paper fibers break down and become shorter, eventually too short to make paper out of....
It's wonderful to see artists out there thinking of ways to create cool gifts and accessories out of our current wasteful packaging. It's a good way to immediately help out with the existing waste. However, that alone will not solve the overall problem! In the mean time, package designers and we as a society need to rethink the whole idea of packaging and what's necessary. We need to find packaging solutions that are eco friendly and affordable, and use them!
I see way too many products using an excess amount of box, just to have a larger presence on the shelf, so they will be noticed among all the other unnecessarily large boxes! I believe a transitionary solution would be for everyone to downsize their packaging together, to eliminate the competitive allure of using bigger boxes! A bigger box does NOT mean more value, it simply means more waste! Waste does not equal value! Cheap bargain prices are too often mistaken for value. What's the value in destroying our beautiful planet in order to save a few bucks?
